Impressions
Fotografiska x Autograph Collection Hotels
Every traveler is different. Every journey is unique. In Impressions, four celebrated photographers, inspired by extended stays at Autograph Collection Hotels, show us their takes on extraordinary places, revealing fresh perspectives through photography. This is the magic of travel—the chance to see things in a new way.
ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
Fotografiska and Autograph Collection Hotels present photographic journeys inspired by the artist’s experience and gaze as visitor, traveler, and guest. In Impressions, four Magnum-represented photographers use portraiture, landscape, color, and play to immerse us in four select destinations.
Jonas Bendiksen dives into the streets of Berlin in search of spontaneous moments of inspiration and convergence. Cristina de Middel engages with the powerful light, nature and vibrant colors of San Pedro, playfully blurring the lines of fact and fiction. Gregory Halpern creates a dynamic, emotional portrait of Oklahoma City through unconventional encounters with its landscapes and people. Alessandra Sanguinetti probes the surface of Tokyo in search of character and mystery, revealing unseen dimensions. Four artists out of their element share their impressions of place through photography.
ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP
Impressions is an installation exploring artist as traveler— offering us a sense of wonder through distinctive approaches spanning from documentary to fantastical. With installations at select Fotografiska and Autograph Collection Hotels worldwide, the collaboration invites viewers to experience Berlin, San Pedro, Oklahoma City, and Tokyo through photography and short films. Limited-edition prints from the series reveal moments of discovery through the artist’s personal connection to the unfamiliar.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jonas Bendiksen’s (b. 1977, Tønsberg, Norway) sharply evocative images explore themes of community, faith, and technology. Born in Norway in 1977, Bendiksen began his career at the age of nineteen, before leaving for Russia to pursue his own work as a photojournalist. Following his years there, he has worked on both editorial and personal projects, including deep dives into Messianic communities (The Last Testament, 2017) to the advent of fake news and AI (The Book of Veles, 2021). Bendiksen lives with his wife and children outside Oslo, Norway.
Alessandra Sanguinetti (b. 1968, New York, New York) is an Argentine-American photographer, based in California. Her monographs include On the Sixth Day, The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic meaning of their Dreams, among others. She’s a recipient of numerous fellowships and awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship. Her photographs are in various public and private collections, such as the New York Museum of Modern Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
After 10 years as a photojournalist, Cristina De Middel (b. 1975, Alicante, Spain) began investigating photography’s ambiguous relationship to truth. Blending documentary and conceptual photographic practices, her work questions stereotypes and absolute truths. Born in Spain, she lives in Bahia, Brazil. She has been the president of Magnum Photos since 2022.
Gregory Halpern (b. 1977, Buffalo, New York) is known for his lyrical photographs of contemporary American life and his influential photobooks. He is also the co-author of The Photographer’s Playbook (Aperture, 2014), now in its tenth printing. Halpern was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, among many other awards. He lives in Rochester, New York with his wife and their two daughters.
