Fotografiska New York is proud to present the first-ever exhibition dedicated to contemporary NYC artist Daniel Arsham’s photography practice.

Arsham has been dabbling in the world of photography since he was just 11 years old. Taking photographs has become an essential component of his practice, fundamentally informing his work as a sculptor and designer to this day. Best known for collaborations with brands like Tiffany & Co., Disney, and Hot Wheels, the iconic artist’s personal archive of images will be unveiled to the world for the first time.

This exhibition will take viewers on a journey alongside Arsham, offering a lens into his life with a focus on the juxtaposition of natural and urban environments. Visitors will encounter never-before-seen photographs alongside sculptures and artworks that collectively demonstrate the broad impact photography has had on the artist’s overall practice.

His photographs are primarily black and white, creating a unifying, monochromatic aesthetic. Framed photographs will line the walls of the galleries, accompanied by large free-standing photographs. Arsham’s images of skylines and nightscapes bring light, the passage of time, and negative space to the forefront.

“My grandfather gave me my first camera, a Pentax K 1000, when I was 11 years old. The gift quickly became an obsession: with the weight of the camera, the click of the shutter and as the primary method of documenting my life for decades to come.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hailing from Miami, New York based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham attended The Cooper Union in New York City where he received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003. He became represented by Galerie Perrotin in Paris in 2005, toured worldwide with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as a stage designer, and founded collaborative design studio Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen in 2007. In 2014, Arsham established a film company called Films of the Future. In 2021, Arsham was appointed the role of creative director of the Cleveland Cavaliers, becoming the first-ever fine artist to hold a position of this nature. In recent years, Arsham’s practice has begun to bridge the gap between fine art and commerce through Arsham Editions and Archive Editions, two subsets of Arsham Studio dedicated to the conception of limited edition artworks aimed at reaching a wider global audience. Today, he engages in ongoing collaborative practices with world-renowned artists, musicians, designers, and brands like Tiffany & Co., Disney, Heinz, and more.

Daniel Arsham’s work explores the fields of fine art, architecture, performance, design and film. His uchronic aesthetic explores the concept of fictional archaeology: the creation and crystallization of ambiguous in-between spaces and situations, and the staging of what Arsham refers to as future relics of the present.

Most of the objects that Arsham sculpts in stone reference the late 20th century, when technological obsolescence unprecedentedly accelerated along with the digital dematerialization of our world. While the present, the future and the past poetically collide in his haunted yet playful visions between romanticism and pop art, Arsham also experiments with the timelessness of iconic symbols and social mores across cultures.

The artist’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, The Athens Bienniale in Athens, Greece, The New Museum In New York, Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati, SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah GA, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta GA. Arsham is represented by Galerie Perrotin in Paris, Hong Kong, New York, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo. Arsham also shows with Baró Galeria in Lisbon and Mallorca, Ron Mandos in Amsterdam, Nanzuka Gallery in Tokyo, Friedman Benda in New York, and König Galerie in Berlin.
