About the Event

Join artist Tony Gum for a first look of Milked in Africa. Tony Gum (b. 1995) first rose to prominence for Black Coca-Cola, a series of self-portraits that earned her a major following in her native South Africa and beyond. In her new series, Gum once again uses herself as both muse and canvas to explore contemporary narratives of exploitation and commercialization, and to emphasize the role that heritage and culture play in capturing African art history. Her bold portraits draw on the rich visual language of fashion editorials, using costumes and props to deliver incisive, relevant social commentary. With a deep interest in local art and the development of art education in South Africa, Gum takes an active role in creating new avenues of creative outlets for her community in Cape Town. Exhibition Manager Meredith Breech will be in conversation with the artist about her new exhibition and the crucial role of local art and art education in The Loft from 7-8PM. Don’t miss it.Members will be granted access on a first come, first serve basis.
