Santa Barbara
Tribeca Film Festival
About the Event
Join the filmmaker and independent photography curator and historian Pauline Vermare (formerly the cultural director of Magnum Photos NY, and a curator at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)) for a conversation and audience Q&A following the film.
Diana Markosian will also be signing books after the talk.
The short film Santa Barbara is an autofictional drama unraveling a family secret. Based on the true life story of artist and filmmaker Diana Markosian (https://www.dianamarkosian.com/), the film explores the profound sacrifice made by Markosian’s mother becoming a mail-order bride, abandoning her country and husband, in search of the American Dream. Together with a casting director, and a group of actors, Markosian reconstructs her family’s exodus to America, from breadlines in the former Soviet Union, to their arrival in California, and the complicated honeymoon that followed.
It forces us to ask: how far are we willing to go to be American? What will we sacrifice? And how do we live with those choices?
