JC Hopkins In Concert
Billie Holiday Birthday Celebration
About the Event
The JC Hopkins Biggish Band plays tribute to the most influential jazz singer in the history of the music, Billie Holiday, on her 107th birthday. The ten piece biggish band backs singers Vanisha Gould, Joy Hanson and Izaiah Harris as they interpret the music of the great Lady Day featuring musical arrangements commissioned for the occasion.
The band is famous for supporting some of the finest vocalists performing today including Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Elvis Costello, Justin Vivian Bond and many more.
This special night dedicated to Lady Day begins with cocktails and a presentation by author and archivist Grayson Dantzic who will share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, rare ephemera and images from his 20+ year journey making his book “JERRY DANTZIC: BILLIE HOLIDAY AT SUGAR HILL.”
Through the rediscovery of his late father Jerry Dantzic’s unseen photographs of Billie Holiday taken in 1957, the previously known historical narrative changes resulting in a rediscovering and illumination of her humanity. This publication is also the companion book to the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services [SITES] show “BILLIE HOLIDAY AT SUGAR HILL: PHOTOGRAPHS BY JERRY DANTZIC.”
